Haren Thakur (b. 1953) is a distinguished Indian artist whose practice is deeply rooted in the tribal ethos and natural landscapes of Jharkhand. A graduate of Kala Bhavana, Santiniketan, he was mentored by eminent artists Ramkinkar Baij, Somnath Hore, and Benode Behari Mukherjee. Their influence, alongside the simplicity and expressive depth of Santhali culture, has played a significant role in shaping his artistic vision. After establishing his studio in Ranchi in 1976, Thakur developed a lasting connection with the tribal communities of Jharkhand and their relationship with nature. Working across painting, drawing, collage, and sculpture, he has evolved a distinctive visual language that brings together tribal forms, contemporary aesthetics, and the rhythms of the natural world. His works often incorporate mixed media on Nepalese rice paper, reflecting his engagement with Indigenous materials and traditional craftsmanship. Drawing inspiration from flora, fauna, mythology, tribal life, and forgotten histories, his compositions explore the symbolic and emotional dimensions of human existence. Harmony, rhythm, and spiritual resonance remain central to his artistic expression.Thakur's visual language combines the geometric simplicity of tribal art with elements reminiscent of ancient Egyptian mural traditions. Through this synthesis, he seeks to rediscover the essence of early artistic expression and its enduring connection with human experience. His approach to modernism remains grounded in Eastern aesthetics and the artistic ideals of Santiniketan, offering an alternative to conventional Western artistic traditions.
For Thakur, art emerges from an intuitive relationship with nature, memory, and the past rather than from rigid doctrines or surface sophistication. His work celebrates spontaneity, inner rhythm, and the interconnectedness of life, establishing a dialogue between traditional visual cultures and contemporary Indian art.Working across Ranchi, Kolkata, and Mumbai, Haren Thakur continues to pursue an evolving artistic practice that bridges cultural heritage and modern expression.
